Human Remains Found Near Pryor Ridge Road in Marion County Identified as Missing Man Phillip Gage Thrasher More Than Two Years After He Vanished in 2024

October 5, 2026Seth McKillop Standard

JASPER, TN — Human remains found near Pryor Ridge Road on Sept. 16 have been identified as Phillip Gage Thrasher, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said, bringing a long search for the missing man to a grim close.

Thrasher had been reported missing from Marion County in March 2024. Officials said he was positively identified after the remains were taken first to a medical examiner’s office and later to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for examination.

The sheriff’s office said the cause of death has not been released.

Multiple agencies helped recover the remains

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said it worked with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Murfreesboro Police Department and the Hamilton County Crime Scene Unit to recover “several human remains” in the county.

Authorities have not publicly explained whether the remains belonged to Thrasher alone or whether they are connected to other cases. The sheriff’s office said it has been reached for clarification about those other remains.

The recovery effort centered on the area near Pryor Ridge Road, where Thrasher had last been linked to in the missing-person case.

Thrasher was last seen on Pryor Ridge Road in March 2024

Before the identification, the Marion County Sheriff’s Department had been asking the public for help locating Thrasher. Deputies said he was last seen around 2 p.m. on March 31, 2024, on Pryor Ridge Road.

He was described as 5 feet 11 inches tall and about 135 pounds. Authorities also said he had several tattoos, including a wolf on his left forearm, three triangles on his right forearm, and roses on his right arm and shoulder.

The missing-person bulletin asked anyone with information about his whereabouts to call the sheriff’s department at 423-942-2525.

Family notified as investigators withhold cause of death

Sheriff Chris Webb said the office extends condolences to Thrasher’s family. No additional details about the circumstances of his death have been released.

Officials have not said how long the remains were in the area before being discovered or what led investigators to the site on Sept. 16. The identification means investigators can now move forward with a case that had remained open for more than two years.

For now, the sheriff’s office says the cause of death remains undetermined in public statements.

A missing-person case that drew a countywide search

Thrasher’s disappearance prompted a public appeal in 2024 as deputies tried to gather information from residents who may have seen him near Pryor Ridge Road. That appeal included his physical description and tattoo details so people could help identify him.

The case later expanded into a recovery operation involving state and regional law enforcement and forensic specialists. The sheriff’s office has not said whether any criminal investigation is tied to the remains or whether foul play is suspected.

What is clear is that the missing-person inquiry that began with a community plea has now ended in a confirmed identification.

What investigators have said so far

Authorities have confirmed the identity, the location of the discovery and the fact that the remains were examined through the medical examiner’s office and the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

They have not released a timeline for when the identification process was completed, nor have they disclosed further forensic findings. The sheriff’s office said it is still working to learn more.

For Marion County, the identification closes one chapter of a case that began with a missing-person alert in the spring of 2024 and ended with the recovery of human remains this September.
