Cambridge City Man Arrested After Eight-Month Indiana State Police Investigation Into Alleged Child Solicitation and Exploitation, With Search Warrant Served Wednesday
CAMBRIDGE CITY, IN — A Cambridge City man is facing multiple felony charges after Indiana State Police say an eight-month investigation uncovered allegations of child solicitation and exploitation. Investigators said the case moved forward after a search warrant was served Wednesday in Cambridge City.
Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old James William Slonaker. He was arrested and taken to the Wayne County Jail following the investigation.
The charges are preliminary, and Slonaker is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
How the investigation began and what detectives say they found
Indiana State Police said the case started after detectives received information from another state agency about alleged child solicitation. That tip led investigators into a broader inquiry that lasted about eight months.
During the investigation, detectives also said they received additional information from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Those leads helped expand the case and connect it to more than one source of information.
By the time the warrant was executed, police said they had developed enough information to make an arrest and continue with felony charges. The investigation remains a criminal matter handled by state police.
Felony counts filed after the arrest in Wayne County
Officials said Slonaker was preliminarily charged with three offenses: Level 4 felony child exploitation, Level 5 felony child exploitation, and Level 6 felony possession of child sexual abuse material.
Those charges reflect the seriousness of the allegations investigators say they developed during the case. Indiana State Police have not released additional details about the evidence behind each count.
Because the charges are preliminary, the case will now move through the court process. At this stage, the accusations have not been proven in court.
State police and federal agents joined the warrant operation
Several law enforcement agencies helped with the investigation and the execution of the search warrant, according to Indiana State Police. The list included the Indiana State Police ICAC Unit and K9 Titus, the Indiana ICAC Task Force, and the Indiana State Police Digital Forensics Unit.
Other participating agencies were the Indiana State Police Drug Enforcement Section Criminal Interdiction Unit, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio, the Abington Police Department in Pennsylvania, and the Rochester Police Department in New York.
That cooperation crossed city, county and state lines as investigators worked the case. Police did not say which agency provided which part of the assistance.
What the Indiana ICAC Task Force investigates
The Indiana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force said it focuses on reports involving online child sexual exploitation, solicitation, and the production and distribution of child sexual abuse material. The agency’s work often involves digital evidence and multi-agency coordination.
In this case, the task force said it served the search warrant in Cambridge City on Wednesday. That action came after the extended investigation and the collection of multiple tips.
Indiana State Police have not announced any further arrests tied to the case. The investigation, however, remains active in the sense that the criminal process has only just begun.
What happens next in the court process
For now, Slonaker remains accused, not convicted. Indiana law requires that he be treated as innocent unless prosecutors prove the case in court.
Because the charges are preliminary, court filings and future hearings will determine how the case proceeds. Police have not publicly detailed a schedule for any upcoming proceedings.
The allegations place the focus on the evidence investigators say they gathered over many months, along with the digital and interagency resources used to build the case. Any final outcome will depend on the court process ahead.
Community impact after a long-running online exploitation case
The arrest is the latest example of how internet crimes investigations can stretch over months and involve agencies beyond a single local department. Indiana State Police said the case depended on outside tips and digital investigative work before Wednesday’s warrant was served.
For Cambridge City, the arrest brings a serious criminal case into a small community while leaving many details still under wraps. Police have not publicly said what specific evidence was found or whether the search turned up additional material.
What investigators have made clear is that the case centers on alleged online exploitation and child sexual abuse material, and that the charges now move into the legal system for further review.
