Towson University Lifts Shelter in Place After 18 Year Old Is Shot Along York Road in Baltimore County, With Police Still Searching for Suspect
TOWSON, MD — Towson University ended a shelter-in-place order Sunday night after a shooting along York Road left an 18-year-old man injured near campus. Baltimore County police said the call came in around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 27 in the 8000 block of York Road.
When officers arrived, they found the victim in the area of Campus Drive and rushed him to a local hospital. Authorities said the gunshot wound was non-life-threatening. Police also confirmed the young man is not a student at Towson University.
Police say shooting does not appear tied to Towson University
Detective Trae Corbin said during a Sunday night news conference that investigators do not believe the shooting was connected to Towson University. That statement came after the school had already told community members to shelter in place, close windows and doors, and report anything unusual to police.
The warning covered the immediate campus area while officers worked the scene. Once police determined the incident was not related to the university, officials lifted the order and told community members they could return to normal activity.
Officers clear an apartment unit on York Road
Police said officers checked an apartment unit in the 8000 block of York Road to make sure a suspect was not inside. An unidentified number of people were detained there during that investigation, according to authorities.
Even after that search, police said the suspect had not been apprehended by Sunday night. Investigators also have not said whether the victim and suspect know each other, leaving key questions unanswered as the case moved forward.
Campus Drive becomes the focus after the victim is located
Although the shooting was reported in the 8000 block of York Road, police said the victim was found nearby in the area of Campus Drive. That detail helped shape the response from both campus officials and county officers, who concentrated resources around the streets bordering the university.
Corbin said police planned to deploy additional units in the area to increase the police presence. The extra patrols were meant to support the investigation and reassure people living, studying, or traveling near the school after the evening incident.
Towson University tells community members to resume normal activity
After the shelter-in-place order was lifted, Towson University said community members could go back to normal activity. The school had first alerted people to stay inside, keep doors and windows closed, and wait for further instruction while the situation was developing.
The university’s response reflected the proximity of the shooting to campus, even though police later said the victim was not a student and the case did not appear to involve the school itself. The precaution lasted through the evening as officers worked to secure the area.
