October 4, 2026Seth McKillop Standard

WASHINGTON, DC — A man and a woman were shot Saturday evening in Northwest Washington’s Petworth neighborhood, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Officers found both adults conscious and breathing when they arrived in the 3700 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW.

Police said the shooting was reported around 6:55 p.m. Both victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. Detectives later circulated a preliminary lookout for two men who may have been inside a black sedan.

Officers reached the 3700 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW around 6:55 p.m.

Fourth District officers responded to the location after a reported shooting in the 3700 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW. The block is part of Petworth, a residential area in Northwest Washington that has recently drawn attention because of repeated gunfire.

When officers arrived, they found the two wounded adults still conscious and breathing. Police did not immediately release the ages of the victims or describe how many times either person was struck.

Both were taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not said whether their injuries were life-threatening.

Police description points to two men and a black sedan

After the shooting, police issued a preliminary lookout for two men who may have been connected to the incident. Investigators also said the men may have been in a black sedan.

The lookout is an early step in the investigation and can change as officers gather more information. Police have not released additional identifying details about the vehicle or the people they are seeking.

No arrests were announced, and investigators have not said what led to the shooting. The department has also not said whether the victims knew the suspects.

Another recent shooting near Georgia Avenue-Petworth raised neighborhood concern

The Petworth shooting came after another recent incident in the same general area. Police had also investigated a separate shooting near the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro Station, where two people were shot and the gunman remained at large.

That earlier case added to concerns in a normally quiet Northwest D.C. community that has faced two shootings within two weeks. The latest violence again focused attention on the corridor around Petworth and nearby transit and residential streets.

Police have not said whether the two shootings are related.

What police have released so far about the investigation

The Metropolitan Police Department has kept the public update limited to the time, place, injuries and lookout information. Investigators have not announced a motive, and they have not identified any suspects by name.

Officers continue to ask for help from anyone who may have seen the shooting or the black sedan described in the lookout. Community tips can help detectives determine the movements of the people involved and whether other witnesses were nearby.

Police did not provide further details about the condition of the victims after they reached the hospital.

How residents can share tips with D.C. police

Anyone with information is being asked to call police at 202-727-9099. Tips can also be sent by text to 50411.

Authorities did not say whether they believe the suspects are still in the area. For now, the case remains an active investigation centered on a Saturday evening shooting in the 3700 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW.

Police have urged people with knowledge of the incident to come forward as detectives continue their search for the two men mentioned in the lookout.
