New Hampshire Man Charged With Manslaughter in Wells Hit-And-Run That Killed Gregory Nolan on Route 1, With Arraignment Set for January 13
WELLS, ME — A New Hampshire man is facing a manslaughter charge in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Wells that killed a 50-year-old local man in March. Maine State Police said Daniel Paul, 56, of Atkinson, New Hampshire, was arrested Sunday morning and charged after the crash on Route 1.
Authorities said the wreck led to the death of Gregory Nolan, who was 50 and lived in Wells. Paul is also accused of aggravated driving to endanger and aggravated leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury or death. Police have not publicly detailed exactly how the crash unfolded.
Charges filed after March crash on Route 1
Maine State Police and Wells Police said the charges stem from a crash that occurred March 24 on Route 1. The state police release said the collision happened in connection with the death of Nolan, and that Paul is now facing multiple criminal counts tied to the incident.
The crash remains described by investigators as a hit-and-run. Officials have not said what caused the collision or described the sequence of events leading up to Nolan’s death. The case has now moved from investigation into the court system, with Paul expected to answer the charges in Biddeford.
Police say the crash happened around 2:04 p.m.
State police said the March 24 crash occurred at about 2:04 p.m. near the intersection of Post and Mile roads. On March 30, Maine State Police posted on social media asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward.
That appeal for information came several days after the collision as investigators continued trying to piece together what happened. The public notice identified the time and location of the crash and asked witnesses or anyone with relevant details to contact authorities.
Investigators identified two vehicles involved
According to the police post, the vehicles involved were a 2009 Audi A4 with Maine plates and a 2015 Ford Focus with New Hampshire plates. Police said the Ford Focus was seen heading southbound on Route 1 after the crash.
Authorities did not say which vehicle Nolan was in or explain how the two cars came into contact. The description released by police is one of the few public details so far about the crash itself, and it remains unclear what role each vehicle played.
Daniel Paul is due in Biddeford court in January
Paul is scheduled to be arraigned at Biddeford Unified Court on Jan. 13. Officials did not say where he is being held, if anywhere, following his arrest.
The court appearance will be the next major step in the case as prosecutors move forward with the manslaughter and related charges. For now, the investigation is still active, and state police have said they continue to gather information about the fatal March crash.
Family and investigators still face unanswered questions
The killing of Nolan left investigators trying to understand what happened on a busy stretch of Route 1 in Wells. So far, police have not released a fuller account of the crash, including whether weather, speed or other factors may have been involved.
NEWS CENTER Maine said it reached out to Maine State Police for more information. The case remains under development as authorities and the public await additional details, including what evidence led to the arrest and how the crash unfolded before the alleged hit-and-run.
