Marion Police End Ten-Hour Armed Standoff on Silver Street With Less-Lethal Force After Suspect Fired Shots at Officers and Faces Attempted Murder Charges

October 7, 2026Seth McKillop Standard

MARION, OH — Police in Marion used less-lethal force Tuesday morning to end a standoff that lasted more than ten hours inside a home on Silver Street. The confrontation began Monday when officers went to serve an active arrest warrant and found a 64-year-old Marion man holding a firearm to his head.

Authorities said the man, identified as Harold L. White, threatened to harm himself and warned that he would kill officers if they came closer. Officers pulled back, then brought in specialized teams to try to resolve the situation without serious injury. No serious injuries were reported to officers, the suspect, or any bystanders.

Officers serving a warrant found White armed inside the 700 block of Silver Street

Marion police said officers were serving an active warrant at a residence in the 700 block of Silver Street when they encountered White inside the home. At that point, he was armed and pointing the firearm at his own head, prompting officers to leave the immediate area and call for backup.

The department’s Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team were brought in soon after the first contact. Police said the goal was to handle the scene safely and avoid a violent confrontation. The incident remained active through the night as officers worked around the home and tried to bring White out peacefully.

Because White was considered a danger to himself, the public and responding officers, law enforcement leaders treated the call as a high-risk standoff rather than a routine warrant service. That decision set the stage for the long response that followed.

Negotiators tried to reach White before he stopped communicating

Police said negotiators made repeated efforts to speak with White and persuade him to surrender. Those efforts continued over the course of the standoff, but White eventually stopped communicating and kept making threats against law enforcement.

As the hours passed, the Marion Police Department asked for help from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Special Response Team and the Crawford County Special Response Team. Those agencies joined the response near the end of the incident, adding more specialized personnel to the scene.

Officials said the extended effort reflected the department’s attempt to avoid a deadly outcome. The standoff stretched past ten hours before officers moved to more direct tactics to locate White and bring the situation under control.

Chemical agents and forced openings were used to locate the suspect

Special Response Team members deployed chemical agents and created new openings by breaking windows and doors as part of the effort to find White inside the house. Police said those actions were taken after he remained uncooperative and continued to pose a threat.

The added access points were meant to help officers see inside and safely determine where White was located. Law enforcement officials said the suspect’s threats and silence made the scene increasingly difficult to manage through negotiation alone.

Those tactics are considered less-lethal and are typically used when officers need to reduce risk while gaining control of a dangerous scene. In this case, police said the steps were intended to protect White, the public and responding officers while moving the incident toward an arrest.

Bean-bag rounds and pepper balls ended the confrontation near 9:30 a.m.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers confronted White near a doorway and used bean-bag rounds and pepper ball projectiles to subdue him. Police said White fired multiple shots at officers during that confrontation.

Officers did not use lethal force in response. Instead, they continued with less-lethal rounds until they were able to arrest White without further trouble after searching the residence.

The arrest marked the end of the standoff and brought the long police operation to a close. Authorities have said the response was designed to stop the threat while limiting the chance of serious injury.

White faces attempted murder and firearm-related charges as review continues

White was taken into custody and is being held on charges that include two counts of attempted murder, failure to appear on an active warrant, resisting arrest and multiple firearm offenses. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case for formal charges.

Police said additional charges may still be filed as investigators continue reviewing the incident. That review will include the events leading up to the standoff, the threats White made and the shots fired during the confrontation with officers.

Marion Police Chief Jay McDonald thanked the agencies that responded and said officers used every technique available to reach a peaceful ending. He also said no serious injuries were reported for any citizen, officer or suspect.
