New York Times Games Engineering Director Jonathan Mckinsey Fatally Shot in Dublin Parking Lot as Police Arrest His In-Laws on Murder Suspicion
DUBLIN, CA — A New York Times Games engineering director was killed Saturday afternoon in a parking lot near Dublin Sports Grounds, and police say his in-laws were arrested soon after on suspicion of murder.
Dublin Police Services said a sergeant spotted a man lying in the lot around 3:08 p.m. At nearly the same time, dispatchers were receiving multiple 911 calls about a shooting. Jonathan McKinsey, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the arrests followed within minutes, with help from witnesses and other community members who assisted officers at the park area. Investigators have not publicly said what led to the shooting or identified a motive.
Police say officers found the victim and detained two suspects within minutes
Dublin Police Services said the response began when a sergeant driving near the sports grounds noticed the man in the parking lot. The discovery lined up with the calls coming into dispatch, which reported an active shooting scene.
Officers detained two suspects shortly after the incident: Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77. Police identified them as McKinsey’s in-laws and said they were arrested on suspicion of murder.
Authorities credited witnesses and community members for helping officers move quickly. Police said that cooperation was critical to the swift arrests, though they have not described exactly what information witnesses provided.
New York Times confirms McKinsey worked as games engineering director since 2023
A New York Times spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital that McKinsey served as director of engineering for games. The company said he had worked there since January 2023.
McKinsey’s death drew attention because of his role at a major news organization with a growing games operation. He was 40 years old.
Police did not say whether the shooting happened during a dispute or whether McKinsey had been targeted in advance. The public statement from law enforcement focused on the arrest and the scene response.
Couple booked into Santa Rita Jail ahead of Wednesday arraignment
Zhang and Chen were booked into Santa Rita Jail after their arrest, according to police. The married couple is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 9 a.m. PT.
Police have not released further details about the case, and the names of the suspects were made public in the department’s account of the arrest. The murder suspicion remains part of an active investigation.
Authorities have not announced additional charges. The next court appearance may offer the first public updates on how prosecutors plan to proceed.
Court records show an ongoing family and custody dispute before the killing
Court records obtained by Fox News Digital show McKinsey was already involved in an ongoing legal dispute with his wife, Candice Jang. Those records say he faced a 2025 child-abuse case alleging cruelty to a child by endangering health and corporal injury to a child.
The records also show that McKinsey and Jang separately sought domestic-violence restraining orders against each other. In addition, McKinsey filed for divorce in December 2025.
A status hearing in that divorce case had been scheduled for Oct. 10. The filings add context to the family tensions surrounding the case, but police have not said whether they are connected to the shooting.
Investigators have not announced a motive as the case moves toward court
At this point, investigators have not publicly identified a motive for the shooting. Dublin Police Services has released only limited details, focusing on the discovery of the body, the rapid arrest, and the role of witnesses.
The case now appears to move from the immediate police response to the court process. Zhang and Chen are expected to appear before a judge Wednesday morning in Santa Rita Jail proceedings.
For now, the main facts are stark: a 40-year-old technology executive was shot dead in a park parking lot, and two relatives by marriage were taken into custody within minutes. Police say the investigation remains open.
