Decatur Police Ask for Help Finding Royer James Ramsell, 26, Who Has Been Missing for More Than Eight Months After Last Contact in January

September 28, 2026Seth McKillop Standard

DECATUR, IL — Decatur police are asking the public to help locate Royer James Ramsell, a 26-year-old man who has been missing for more than eight months. Ramsell was last heard from on Jan. 20, 2026, and authorities say they are continuing to look for leads in the case.

Police said Ramsell is unhoused and known to stay at local shelters. Investigators are also working with a possible sighting from July, when he may have been seen in Decatur while riding a Decatur Public Transit bus.

Police say Ramsell was last heard from on Jan. 20

The timeline in the case begins with Ramsell’s last known contact on Jan. 20. Decatur police have not said what happened after that point, but the length of time since anyone has heard from him has made the search more urgent for investigators and family members.

Missing-person cases often depend on small details from the public, and police appear to be treating this one the same way. The department has asked anyone who may have seen Ramsell, or who may know where he has been staying, to contact investigators.

A July sighting on a Decatur Public Transit bus could help narrow the search

One of the few possible recent clues came in July, when Ramsell was possibly seen in Decatur while riding a city bus. Police did not say who reported the sighting or whether it has been confirmed, but they are clearly considering it as a useful lead.

Transit systems can be important in missing-person searches because they create points in time and place that can be checked against witness accounts. In Ramsell’s case, the possible bus sighting suggests he may have still been moving around the city months after he was last heard from.

Police describe Ramsell as 5 feet 10 inches and 280 pounds

Authorities released a physical description to help the public identify Ramsell. He is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 280 pounds. That information can be especially important when people are trying to match a face or name to someone they may have seen in passing.

Police have not released additional details about what Ramsell was wearing when he was last seen or whether he has any medical concerns. For now, the basic identifying information is the main tool the public has to work with as the search continues.

Unhoused residents and shelter networks can complicate missing-person searches

Police noted that Ramsell is unhoused and known to stay at local shelters. That detail can make locating someone more difficult, because a person may move between different facilities, transportation routes and outdoor locations without leaving a clear trail.

Shelter staff, transit riders and others who move through downtown areas may be among the people most likely to spot him. Even a brief sighting could matter if it helps police confirm where Ramsell was and when he was there.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Decatur police

Decatur police are urging anyone who has seen Ramsell or has information about his whereabouts to call the department at (217) 424-2734. Investigators have not announced any new developments, but they continue to seek help from residents and others who may have noticed him.

Missing-person cases can remain open for long periods when there are few confirmed sightings. In this case, police are still trying to piece together Ramsell’s movements after January, and they are relying on the public to help fill in the gaps.
