Cleveland Police Identify Body Pulled From the Cuyahoga River as Missing Maryland Man Phoenix Phillips After Browns Game Disappearance

October 8, 2026Seth McKillop Standard

CLEVELAND, OH — Cleveland police have confirmed that the body recovered from the Cuyahoga River on Tuesday is Phoenix Phillips, a 24-year-old Maryland man who disappeared after a Browns game. Authorities said Phillips was last seen on the morning of Oct. 2 near West Superior Avenue and Robert Lockwood Drive.

Police said Phillips was reported missing several hours later. They also said the person who reported him missing was from out of town, as was Phillips. Investigators have not released details about how he ended up in the river or what may have led to his death.

Phillips was last seen near West Superior Avenue and Robert Lockwood Drive

According to Cleveland police, the last known sighting of Phillips came downtown on the morning of Oct. 2. The location places the case near a busy stretch of the city’s riverfront and road network, close to where people often move between downtown destinations and parking areas.

Authorities have not said exactly where Phillips was headed or who he was with before he was reported missing. The timeline released by police shows that several hours passed between the last confirmed sighting and the missing-person report. That gap has become a central part of the public search for answers.

Family members traveled to Cleveland and handed out flyers

Phillips’ mother, Amanda, described him as a loving son, a successful business owner and the father of a 2-year-old boy. She said he loved sports, football and the Steelers, a detail that underscored how closely the family has held onto personal memories while waiting for news.

She drove to Cleveland on Saturday and began handing out flyers while searching for her son. More relatives arrived early Tuesday morning, as the family continued its effort to find answers. Their presence in the city reflected how quickly the case drew loved ones from Maryland to Northeast Ohio.

A missing-person case that drew attention after a Browns game

Phillips was reported missing after attending a Browns game, according to police and family coverage tied to the case. That connection helped turn the disappearance into a closely watched search, particularly because he and the person who reported him missing were both from out of town.

The circumstances surrounding the night and early morning hours before he vanished have not been publicly explained. Police have not said whether any witnesses have come forward or whether investigators have identified a sequence of events leading from the game to the river recovery. For now, the confirmed facts remain limited to the timeline and the identification.

Police have not said what caused his death

As of Wednesday evening, Cleveland police had not released any further information about what happened or whether a cause of death had been determined. That leaves several major questions unanswered, including how Phillips entered the water and whether foul play or another factor played any role.

Officials have only confirmed the identification of the body and the basic sequence of the case. No additional findings were made public about injuries, forensic results or the circumstances of the recovery. Investigators have not announced any suspect, arrest or public safety warning connected to the death.

What remains unknown as investigators continue their work

The case now rests on what investigators can establish from the recovery, the missing-person timeline and any evidence collected along the riverfront. Police have not shared whether the body was found by officers, rescue crews or another group, and they have not disclosed a more exact location in the river.

For Phillips’ family, the identification answers one urgent question while leaving others unresolved. The family’s search began with flyers and an appeal for help, and it now shifts toward understanding how the 24-year-old died after being last seen in downtown Cleveland.
