Passenger Killed, Driver Flown to Bangor Hospital After Vehicle Crashes Into Two Ellsworth Homes Near Main Street Intersection in Predawn Wreck
ELLSWORTH, ME — A Maine man was killed and two other people were injured after a vehicle left the road and crashed into two homes in Ellsworth early Thursday, authorities said.
The crash happened just before 1:30 a.m. on Main Street near the intersection of Bucksport and Surry roads. Police said the vehicle was traveling toward the intersection when the driver lost control, setting off a chain of impacts that damaged both houses.
The passenger, identified as 23-year-old Paul Meservey of Orrington, died in the crash. The driver, 19-year-old Landon Rockwell of Dedham, was thrown from the vehicle and taken first to a local hospital and then flown to Bangor for further treatment.
Police say the vehicle crossed Main Street before striking a second house
According to police, the vehicle went off the road and hit a house on the opposite side of Main Street before crashing into a second home. The sequence left both properties involved in the collision, though officials have not said what caused Rockwell to lose control.
The crash scene was centered near one of Ellsworth’s main travel corridors, where Main Street meets Bucksport and Surry roads. The timing, shortly before 1:30 a.m., suggests few vehicles and pedestrians would have been on the road, but police have not given any additional details about traffic or weather conditions.
Authorities said the circumstances remain under investigation. The Hancock County District Attorney’s Office has also been notified as part of the response.
One home was empty, but people were inside the second house
Police said the first home struck by the vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the crash. That reduced the chance of a more serious loss of life at one of the houses, but the damage still extended to property on both sides of the street.
There were people inside the second home when the vehicle hit it. One person in that house reported pain and was taken to Maine Coast Hospital for treatment, according to police.
Authorities did not say how many people were in the second home when the crash happened or whether anyone else needed medical care. They also did not release details about the extent of the damage to either house.
Rockwell was ejected and treated before being flown to Bangor
Police said Rockwell was thrown from the vehicle during the crash. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital before being flown to a Bangor hospital, indicating the injuries were serious enough to require advanced care.
The driver’s age and hometown were included in the identification released by police: Landon Rockwell, 19, of Dedham. Officials have not said whether anyone else was in the vehicle or how fast it was traveling at the time of the wreck.
The condition of Rockwell was not immediately released beyond the transfer to Bangor. No charges or citations were announced in the information provided by police.
Meservey’s death adds to a crash that shook a quiet residential area
Meservey, 23, of Orrington, died as a passenger in the vehicle. His death turned what began as a late-night crash into a fatal collision that left one family mourning and another assessing injuries and property damage.
The impact on the neighborhood was significant because the vehicle struck two separate homes rather than stopping after the first collision. That meant the crash spread beyond the roadway and into private property on both sides of Main Street.
Police did not release any information about whether the people inside the second home were residents or visitors. Officials also have not identified the owners of either house.
Investigation continues as district attorney’s office is notified
Authorities said the crash remains under investigation, with the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office notified. That step signals that investigators are treating the case as a serious traffic fatality and will continue reviewing what led up to the wreck.
So far, police have not said whether speed, impairment, distraction or a medical episode may have played a role. They also have not described whether crash reconstruction teams, witness interviews or vehicle inspections are part of the inquiry.
For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the time, location and immediate consequences: one dead passenger, a seriously injured driver, another injured person in the second home and two houses struck in the predawn crash.
